Product concept validation is the process of testing whether a product idea resonates with your target audience before you build it. You're not testing usability (there's nothing built yet). You're testing whether the concept makes sense, whether it connects to a real problem, and whether people see value in the proposed solution.

The more interactive the artifact, the more behavioral signal you'll get. But even a written description tested with the right participants tells you a lot about whether your framing lands. The point of the artifact is to be wrong faster, not to look polished.
For a concept test, your discussion guide typically covers:
Context (5 minutes): Understand the participant's current experience with the problem space before showing them anything. "Tell me about how you currently [relevant activity]." You want their unprimed perspective on the problem before your concept potentially shapes it.
Concept exposure (5-10 minutes): Show the concept. Ask for initial reactions. "Before I explain anything, what are your first thoughts?" Let them ask questions. Note what's confusing.

One warning about your network: friends and former colleagues will be polite, and polite is the enemy of a useful concept test. If you have to use your network, recruit the people you'd describe as "blunt" rather than "supportive."
